• Less than one in three women in India do paid work
  • For resource-poor women specifically, if they work, they predominantly engage in professions traditionally assigned to women such as domestic help, tailoring or beautician work.

  • Only half of women in India are allowed to go to a market by themselves.
  • Many women are denied rights, often unable to make decisions about their own lives.
  • Violence against women in widespread – an incident of domestic violence is reported once every five minutes. About 54% of women in India agree that a man is justified in beating his wife if he has any reason for it.*

We need your help to change this.

Azad Foundation’s Women on Wheels programme empowers resource-poor women to become self-sustaining professional drivers. It enables them to get well-paying and respectful jobs and take control over their lives.

To date it enabled more than 1000 resource-poor women to become employable as professional chauffeurs. Over 400 known to us are currently working as professional drivers across Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata and other cities – providing safe transport to other women. Over 90% of employed women became principle earners of their families. All the women who undertook the training increased their mobility; many were able to say NO to violence and take charge of their lives.

But there are many more women who dream of transforming their lives and we need your support to make this reality. There are many ways you can get involved to help us enhance women’s financial situation, dignity, and empower them to reclaim their freedom.

Get involved to transform lives and bring about irreversible social change:
