Making wheels dance

Azad Foundation India-Dhaneswari

Twenty-year-old Dhaneshwari from Kishangarh, Ajmer has an avid interest in dancing. Married at the young age of fifteen, and a domestic violence survivor, the young girl studied till 9th class and lives with her parents. Her husband and his family treated her badly from the beginning, and after a particularly violent incident, she called her father who brought her home.

Her supportive parents helped her establish as a dance tutor after some struggles. Dhaneshwari’s grandmother, who works in Mahila Jan AdhikarSamiti in Ajmer, along with other MJAS staff told her about Women on Wheels programme, which caught her interest. The first time she came to Jaipur, she was completely enchanted by the sight of women driving. “I never knew that women could be drivers!” she exclaimed.

She is now living in Women on Wheels Academy hostel in Jaipur and is at the ‘On Road’ stage.

‘I am really thankful for my family’s support. I enjoy English, First Aid, and other classes and can’t wait to make my parents proud to see me driving professionally.’
