Women with Wheels Programme

Overview

Azad’s Women With Wheels (WWW) programme aims to empower women by offering them non-traditional livelihood opportunities. With this initiative, women undergo training to work as professional drivers, enabling them to achieve economic independence and challenge traditional gender norms. The programme includes driving lessons, Skill++ modules such as on gender, self-defence to combat gender-based violence, communication skills, English-speaking skills, and professional behaviours and etiquettes. It supports women secure driving licenses and find meaningful employment in the transportation sector. The Women With Wheels programme has been successful in breaking stereotypes and promoting women’s empowerment in a male-dominated industry.

Sivagami, a Chennai-based delivery partner, overcame personal challenges to gain independence and economic stability.

Sivagami has rebuilt her life as a single mother of two children. With only a class 10 education, she transitioned from a salesperson to a successful delivery partner through Azad’s training. She now earns significantly more and travels confidently by her scooty, conquering her previous fear of the road. Sivagami is proud of her independence and makes all decisions for herself. She is dedicated to providing the best education for her children, showcasing her strength and newfound freedom.

Seema, a DTC bus driver, transformed her life from stitching clothes to driving buses.

Seema is a bus driver in Delhi Transport Corporation. Initially earning Rs. 5,000 monthly, she balanced her household duties and stitching to manage travel expenses while training as a four-wheeler driver in Azad. In 2022, after working as a commercial driver with Sakha for some years, Seema earned her Heavy Vehicle License and became a DTC bus driver, now earning over Rs. 26,000 monthly. She is investing in her home, educating her daughters, and inspiring independence.
