As female commercial drivers become more visible on roads, they not only score a point for feminism but also teach their male counterparts better road etiquette

Women are often stereotyped as reckless drivers, but a few women in the capital are turning the cliche on its head and are even taking up commercial assignments. Several cab companies too have started training and hiring women to drive their vehicles in and around Delhi. Thirty-nine-year-old Maya Devi has been working as a driver for eight years. Her first job was with a woman who was looking specifically for a female driver. Today, she drives a van for school students.

“I only studied till Standard 8, but had aspirations to make my family’s living conditions better. So I trained for a few days and realized that driving was a stable profession with scope for a good income,“ she says. Read more
